Chief engineer’s log, stardate 42329.7
The Enterprise has been in deep space for over a year now. Even though it is a new Galaxy class ship, it handles well and did not have any problems yet. It’s dandy nice to finally work on a ship, on which the systems do not break down twice a week. Yet, we still have problems aligning the warp coils so that we can reach 98% efficiency, like the captain demanded. I think we should put more work to it.
***you sigh a bit
But it seems this project will have to wait. The captain informed the Engineering department that we are heading to Aldea, an ancient planet, inhabited by the Aldeans for over 50 000 years. Thank God this civilization is humanoid. I have gotten tired of speaking to serpent heads! Maybe we can learn a thing or two from them. As I understood, they are a superior species.
***you take a glass of water and drink it
Still, one must ask himself: if they are superior, why can’t they solve their own problems? They asked for our help because their planet’s ozone layer is decaying fast.
Seems like their defense cloaking system affected the planet’s outer atmosphere too much. They used a rather ingenious solution: pulverizing varyon particles into air, which luminated by their red sun, made the planet invisible to the naked eye, looking similar to a black hole! In combination with their gravity generator, that can scare any ship to get any closer.

Civilization: Aldeans (~12 bilions)
Civilization’s age: 51 342 years old
Homeworld: Aldea
Species: Humanoid
Average IQ: 293
Aldeans are a peaceful, highly advanced species, but they refused to leave their planet and explore the space. So, they have no ships.
Instead, they welcome other civilizations, with great caution, so that they can enrich their culture and knowledge. They use highly advanced defense systems to cloak their planet and make it invisible to anyone who passes by.
But, there is a reason we do not use varyon particles: they consume the ozone from the atmosphere, leaving large gaps. The Aldeans thought they dosed the atmosphere correctly, but long time usage seems to backfire. Now, the red sun is radiating some areas of the planet, making it uninhabitable. And if this continues to happen, they will have to abandon their planet…
***you make a little pause and look on the ship’s window, staring at Aldea
Anyway, I have an idea and I discussed it with, both the captain and my department. There is a chance we can recreate most of the ozone layer, using the asteroid belt that surrounds the planet. We should be able to shoot asteroids to the planet, in the precise areas where the zone is uninhabited already. The impact should be enough to plunge water and hydrogen particles back into the atmosphere. Along with the radiation and heat from the sun, the ozone layer should patch back.
We need to be careful, because we do not want to hit any of the civilian areas nearby. Hell, it’s going to be tricky, but this might be their only chance to heal their planet…
